Some USS Hyman Snipes, and probably snipes that served on other ships during the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, are beginning to report breathing problems that may or may not be related to the time they spent working in the ship’s engineering spaces during steam line repair jobs.
As you all know now, that white stuff floating around the engine room and/or fire room during the removal and re-installation of steam line insulation, was asbestos. The asbestos-polluted air in the engineering spaces was often much worse during those periods when we were in dry dock.
In order to determine if there are other Hyman Snipes experiencing breathing problems, besides the few that we are aware of, the Hyman Snipes website is conducting a survey. If you are experiencing any breathing problems, please send an email to email@example.com briefly describing your situation. Any action we take will depend on the response from the survey.
We need to know (1) If you are experiencing breathing problems, has the problem been diagnosed by a doctor, and if so, what was the diagnosis? (2) How long have you been aware that you had a breathing problem? (3) Has the Veteran’s Administration provided any assistance to you for the problem? Any other information you could add will help.
Additionally, we are requesting input on any hearing loss/damage that you have experienced that may or may not be related to your service in the engineering spaces while aboard the USS Hyman. (1) If you are experiencing hearing loss/damage, has the problem been diagnosed, and if so, what was the diagnosis? (2) How long have you experienced hearing problems? (3) Has the Veteran’s Administration provided assistance of any kind? Anything else you could add will be beneficial to the survey.
After the survey has been completed, the results will be published on this page, along with the appropriate action, if any, that will be taken. Thank you for your cooperation. Junior
